The Great Gatsby Musical Story & Characters

The Great Gatsby musical is based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel of the same name and takes place in 1920s New York City.

The musical is narrated by Nick Carraway who, as Jay Gatsby’s neighbor and Daisy Buchanan’s cousin, sheds details about the love story between the two main characters. Upon receiving an invitation to one of Gatsby’s extremely extravagant parties, Daisy’s friend Jordan Baker convinces Nick to bring her. In a private moment, Gatsby reveals the plan to his neighbor to win Daisy back despite of her marriage to Tom.

Meanwhile, Tom is having an affair with Myrtle Wilson, wife of working-class garage owner George. Nick bears witness to one of the lovers’ rendezvous at which point – disgusted with his neighbors actions – decides to reintroduce Gatsby and Daisy by way of an invitation to tea. This ultimately leads to an affair between the two pre-war sweethearts.

Jordan, who has vowed never to marry, falls for Nick and proposes to him.

All help breaks loose on an evening at the Plaza Hotel: Gatsby and Daisy’s affair is revealed; Myrtle, pregnant with Tom’s child, gets killed by a car owned by Gatsby; Nick calls of his wedding with Jordan.

George shoots Gatsby at the wealthy man’s mansion out of despair for his wife’s tragic death, then shoots himself.
