ToggleHamilton chronicles the extraordinary life of Alexander Hamilton, one of America’s most influential founding fathers.
The musical begins in 1772 with Hamilton’s arrival in colonial New York as a young orphan from the Caribbean and follows his rapid ascent through American political society thanks to the young man’s brilliance and desire to play a significant part of society.
This is done by establishing his relationships with George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Aaron Burr which thus serve to explore themes such as ambition, legacy, and the cost of believing in revolutionary ideals.
Although there is importance to all of the friendships with other likeminded men that Hamilton encountered while growing up, Hamilton’s bond with Aaron Burr proves to be the most complicated. The man who started out as Hamilton’s mentor evolves to become his philosophical adversary and, ultimately, the passionate revolutionary’s assassin.
Along with acknowledging Hamilton’s contribution in developing America’s financial system, the musical interweaves the Founding Father’s personal stories including the struggles during his marriage to Eliza Schuyler, the subsequent affair with Maria Reynolds, and the intimately intellectual and emotional connection with Angelica, Eliza’s older sister.
Alexander Hamilton – idealistic revolutionary who forms the nucleus around which the story revolves, Founding Father
