ToggleThe Book of Mormon is a comedic musical which follows the journey of missionaries Elder Price and Elder Cunningham who are sent to a village in Uganda with the objective of converting the locals.
Although Elder Price would rather spend his two-year mission in Orlando, he and his loyal companion Elder Cunningham are instead sent to a poverty-stricken village in Africa where they are confronted almost immediately by soldiers under the command of the General. There, they meet the leader Mafala Hatimbi and his daughter Nabulungi, the latter who wishes to be reach paradise as the missionaries proclaim.
When Price decides to abandon his mission, rather than accompany him, Cunningham stays, determined to fulfill his duties. Yet facing hesitation from the villagers, he resorts to complementing his teachings with fabricated tales of science fiction, thus touching on one of the themes of the musical – that using metaphor can indeed be just as – if not more – effective than scripture.
Price returns and when the mission president visits to check on the progress of the pair, he discovers and reveals to the villagers Cunningham’s lies and sends the missionaries back home. The locals, who are made to believe that Cunningham has been eaten by a lion, are in awe when he and Price return to the village and believe that the former has been resurrected.
