ToggleThe jukebox musical MAMMA MIA!, bsed on the songs by teh Swedish group ABBA, revolves around the question of who Sophie’s father is as she prepares for her wedding to Sky.
The musical is set on a fictional Greek island, Kalokairi, where Donna and her daughter Sophie live. Sophie wishes to have her father walk her down the aisle, and secretly invites the three candidates who – based on her mother’s diaries – could indeed be the right man – Sam, Bill, and Harry. When her mother comes face to face with the trio, she is shocked and ultimately reminisces with each one of her former lovers about their past relationship.
As no concrete evidence points to any particular man being her biological father, Sophie asks Donna to give her away on her wedding day. In the middle of the ceremony, the mother reveals that Sophie’s father is present although she is not sure who it actually is; the three men each agree to be “one-third of a father” to Sophie who, suddenly, puts a stop to her own wedding saying that she is not ready.
As to not waste all the preparations that have been made to celebrate a newly-wedded couple, Sam proposes to Donna, and Sophie and Sky head off to travel the world.
